Mechanical Engineer
Reference No: #AU1161
Location: Sydney

Overview of the Role
The Mechanical Engineer performs the following tasks in a role as an independent engineer and in a supporting role to assist other engineers and designers.

Mechanical design and development

  • Develop and refine mechanical systems for printing that can be manufactured in high volume at low cost.
  • Select materials, manufacturing processes and suppliers for parts to suit product requirements and high volume manufacture.
  • Identify part quality improvement needs in conjunction with process development and product testing, examine parts and identify how required improvements can be achieved.
  • Estimate stress and deformation caused by manufacturing processes, transportation and use and improve design. Estimation will be by calculation, FEA and experiments.
  • Analyse assembly and component tolerances to ensure alignment requirements are met.
  • By analysis of existing techniques and through innovation, develop printheads in conjunction with manufacturing process development and electronic design groups.
  • The design of the printhead and its printer interfaces will require consideration of mechanical design, materials selection, fluid properties, surface properties, assembly processes, silicon chip packaging processes, electrical connections, EMC, ESD protection, and thermal issues.
  • Use SolidWorks to produce detailed drawings of components and assemblies with careful attention to tolerances.

Testing and validation

  • Plan experiments, build test samples, perform physical tests and summarise results to:
    1. 1. Demonstrate optimisation of part quality based on test data and microscopic examination,
      2. verify design concepts, and
      3. verify robustness of products against manufacturing, transportation and severe use conditions.
  • Design and build test rigs, models & prototypes for initial testing of mechanical concepts.
  • Contribute to the building of initial prototypes and early product samples.
  • Perform tests on components and assemblies where required to contribute to product verification programs.

Manufacturing drawings and documentation

  • Produce information to take product concept through to manufacturing realisation. Tasks include:
    1. - Materials definition
      - Supplier selection and approval
      - Liaison with suppliers to improve manufacturability
      - Plan and manage procurement of components
  • Produce purchasing and incoming inspection specifications for mechanical components

Other responsibilities

  • Liaise with subcontractors to ensure parts are or materials are available within planned time scales.
  • Work with other technical staff and administrators within the Company.
  • Work in accordance with the drawing and issue controls defined by our systems and within the guidelines of ISO 9001.

Skills required

  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering, mechanical design, structural and thermal analysis, CAD modelling, and product design for high volume manufacture.
  • Proven ability to rapidly grasp new technical concepts and find innovative solutions to challenging engineering problems.
  • Experienced in defining dimensions and tolerances of complex assemblies.
  • Mechanical design skills.
  • Preferably 5 years’ related experience in a high-tech manufacturing company or a research organisation.

The right candidate should possess very good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and work in a team environment with all levels of the organisation.

You should possess a BE, ME, BSc or MSc in Mechanical engineering or a similar discipline.
