Frequently Asked Questions

Q.
How is this high speed achieved?
A.
Through a combination of advanced printheads, print processing chips, software, and ink. The printhead is the full width of the page, with 70,400 nozzles for a standard A4/letter printhead. The print processing chip (SoPEC) is a full system-on-a-chip (SoC) specifically designed for Memjet printers that calculates 900 million ink dots per second for the printhead. The software provides the page data processing that enables Memjet to print at high speed and full photographic quality. The ink is formulated to dry very rapidly so that the printed pages can be stacked in the output tray or handled immediately as they exit the printer.
Q.
What is the print resolution?
A.
A true 1600 x 1600 dots per inch (dpi). The printhead has 1600 nozzles for each color, for each inch of printhead.
Q.
What is the ink drop ejection rate (nozzle firing frequency)?
A.
10 KHz when printing at 30 A4 pages per minute, 20 KHz when printing at 60 A4 pages per minute. Laboratory versions of Memjet printheads operate at up to 100 KHz.
Q.
Can Memjet go faster than 60 ppm?
A.
Certainly. The Memjet prototypes shown to date do not 'push the envelope' of printer speed, as 60 ppm was considered fast enough for a desktop office printer. As speeds increase beyond 60 ppm, paper movement systems tend to become expensive and bulky, and typically unsuitable for desktop use. Memjet printers for commercial use will be much faster. As Memjet printheads can readily be arranged in parallel or serial arrays of any size, the limits to print speed are commercial, not technical.
Q.
How fast does the ink dry?
A.
The pages are completely touch dry as soon as they leave the printer. The ink is absorbed into the paper in milliseconds. Once absorbed into the paper, the water content of the ink slowly reached equilibrium with the atmosphere.
Q.
What type of ink colorant is used?
A.
The ink colorants are advanced dyes for high image brightness, high light fastness, high rub resistance, and compatibility with a wide range of applications.
